Myrtia, the ancestral village of Nikos Kazantzakis, just 15 km south of Heraklion, is wearing its holiday clothes next week to celebrate the 40 years of continuous operation of the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, located in its Central Square. The events, all produced by the Kazantzakis Museum, are open and free to the public.

The events begin on Monday, July 10 at 9:00 p.m. with the official first presentation of the theatrical performance "Nikiforos Fokas" by Nikos Kazantzakis by a nine-member troupe of the Vivi Theater directed by Telemachus Moudatsakis. It is an existential-poetic drama with a historical background that began to be written in 1915, but was published in 1927.
On Thursday, July 13, from 18.00, visitors will have the opportunity to remember or experience from the beginning the four very successful Traveling... festivals organized in the past by the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum and dedicated to several countries (Spain, England, Russia, China ) of the many that the great author traveled and wrote about. This event is multi-thematic with a rich program that includes, among other things, an outdoor photo-installation exhibition, a children's zone with a hidden treasure hunt, artistic events at thematic stations and a gastronomic ethnic tour.
On Sunday 16 July at 20.30 the Vamos Orchestra will give the public a unique musical evening. Thanasis Papathanasiou in Conducting/Orchestration with soloists Tasos Apostolou and Anna Kotis and 22 musicians organized a musical journey through the years of Kazantzakis. It is an attempt to get to know great musical moments that were left imprinted in the chronology of our culture from countries that the author lived in or visited during his life.

The anniversary events are held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture with co-organizers the Region of Crete and the Municipality of Archanes-Asterousia, the support of the Cultural Association of Myrtia and the Development Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Crete. Transport sponsors KTEL Heraklion-Lassithi, Minoan Lines, Aegean Airlines and hospitality sponsors Itanos Hotel and Villa Orestis. The work of the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum is consistently supported by its Grand Sponsor, Mr. Evangelos Marinakis.
