The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum at the Street Art Festival
For
the second consecutive year, the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum is taking
part in the Street Art Festival, offering the educational walk
for adults: "In the footsteps of Nikos Kazantzakis… Megalo Kastro."
Two
guided walks for adults will take place on Thursday, June 19, from
18:00 to 20:00, and on Friday, June 27, from 18:00 to 20:00.
The
walk will start at the church of “Little Saint Minas” and finish at the Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis, located on the
Martinengo Bastion.
These are two walks filled with history, literature, and the scent of another era.
Starting
from the historic church of Mikros Agios Minas, we will trace the
footsteps of Nikos Kazantzakis through Megalo Kastro, the beloved city
of his childhood. We will explore the neighborhood where the great
Cretan author grew up and uncover the location where his family home
once stood, though it no longer survives.
Through selected
excerpts from his works "Freedom and Death" and "Report to Greco", we
will attempt to recreate the atmosphere—the landscapes, colors, and
fragrances—of Heraklion in another time.
We will walk along
Platia Strata—today’s Kalokairinou Avenue—and ascend to the Martinengo
Bastion, the highest point of Heraklion’s Venetian Walls. There, we will
visit Kazantzakis’s tomb and conclude our walk while enjoying panoramic
views of the city.
The walk is designed and executed by Chara Vavadaki.
Comfortable clothing, athletic shoes, a hat, and water are recommended. Pre-registration is required.
The tour will be conducted in Greek.
