The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum at the “Art in the Streets” Festival
The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum concluded its second consecutive year of participation in the Municipality of Heraklion’s Heraklion Street Art Festival (Τέχνη Καθ’ Οδόν) with great success and heartfelt emotion.
This year’s contribution took the form of two literary walks titled “In the Footsteps of Kazantzakis… Megalo Kastro.”
Together with our fellow walkers, we traced Nikos Kazantzakis’s steps through Megalo Kastro, the beloved city of his childhood. Wandering through the narrow streets of Heraklion, we journeyed back in time and uncovered places described in his works—especially Report to Greco and Captain Michalis—connecting them with excerpts from his books.
Led by our senses, we listened to the city’s sounds, breathed in its scents, and absorbed the atmosphere of Megalo Kastro, trying to feel the pulse of a bygone era. We paused at the Morosini Fountain and the New Gate, and then ascended to the Martinengo Bastion—the highest point along the city walls of Heraklion—where our walk ended at the resting place of Nikos Kazantzakis.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who joined us on this special journey—for their spirit, presence, and energy.
We are also sincerely grateful to the Municipality of Heraklion for their wonderful and creative collaboration.
