The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established May 18 as International Museum Day in 1977 in an effort to highlight the role of museums in modern society. The message of this anniversary is for museums to become agents of cultural exchange. Every year, in May, and specifically in the days around May 18, events are held worldwide on a special theme related to the protection of cultural heritage, museums, and their role in modern society. Lectures, exhibitions, meetings, educational programs, and other events are held. The theme of this year's celebration is "Museums, Sustainability and Quality of Life".

The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, in the context of the celebration of International Museum Day 2023 and taking advantage of the fact that it is located in Myrtia, in a characteristic landscape of the Cretan hinterland, is organizing an awareness-raising activity regarding environmental protection, well-being, volunteering, and personal development.

The action will take place on Sunday, May 28, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and includes a few minutes of speeches by volunteer groups active in the above sectors and the walking expedition to clean the surrounding area of the Museum and the nearby hiking route of the Fairy Cave.

The participating voluntary groups are:
1) A.T.A.H.T.O.I.
2) Zooforos
3) Kennel of Heraklion
4) Greek Guiding Association
5) Corps of Greek Scouts
6) Philios Zeus

The Museum's activity is supported by the Cultural Association of Myrtia and the Cultural Association of Astrakoi .
